Jenny Hansen Lane's

2027 Self-Publishing Playbook

Your Q4 action planner. Work through the five steps with the videos. Everything you type saves on this device as you go.

Video 1

Find the books that can win in Q4

Before you create more books or spend more money, look at what you already have. A book that has already sold has given you information. Use it.

Audit your catalog

Add the books you want to look at. Each one gets a Q4 signal score out of 100, built from past Q4 sales, reviews, gift appeal, seasonal fit, and search demand. Books scoring 50+ get suggested for your priority list. You can always add or remove one yourself.

Your Q4 priority list

This is your action step for Video 1. These books carry through the rest of the planner.

Video 2

Make your book easier to buy

Holiday traffic doesn't help if the shopper doesn't understand or want the book. You may not need a new book. You may need to make the one you already published easier for the right buyer to understand.
Video 3

Turn one good idea into more opportunity

When something works, build around the signal instead of starting over. The goal isn't to advertise every book equally. It's to find what's working and give the winners more room.

Series builder

Give the buyer a logical next book. Keep covers, titles, and branding connected so the series makes sense.

Ad test plan before Black Friday

Don't launch Amazon ads for the first time on Black Friday. Enter the daily amount you're willing to test with. The planner splits it by each book's readiness (past Q4 sales, listing work from Step 2, and demand) instead of spreading it evenly.

Use Amazon ad data to protect your profit

Sales alone don't tell you whether a book is winning. Revenue isn't profit. Don't make decisions from one scary number. Make them from the full story your data is telling you.

Keep, cut, or scale calculator

Pull these numbers from your Amazon Ads dashboard for the same date range. Paperback and hardcover royalty here is 60% of list price minus printing. Ebook uses the rate you pick. Kindle Unlimited page reads aren't counted, so a book with strong KU reads may be doing better than this shows.

Q4 is bigger than Black Friday

Black Friday is part of a season. Think October, November, December, January. The data you collect now becomes next year's advantage.

Your action plan

These light up as you finish the work in Steps 1 to 4.

Season checklist

Don't forget January

While everyone is focused on Christmas, pick the fresh-start themes you want ready for the new year.

Q4 data journal

Fill this in as the season runs. It turns into next year's playbook.

The big idea

You don't need 100 new Christmas books

You need to make the books you already have
